Going to a trade show is a golden opportunity to gain some incredibly important contacts in your field. A large number of companies will be there, all looking to gain more business from the numbers of prospective clients who will be coming to look around at what is offered in this sector. Many of the attendees will have immediate needs and some will just be considering a future arrangement, but the possibilities of gaining business are very real, all the same. The value of attending a trade show is not just in the business you gain, but in the new contacts you will make in your field. These contacts carry a value that is impossible to put a price on. Maintaining a professional appearance is as important in making new contacts as it is in finding new clients.
It is all but impossible to work in a vacuum these days. In order to give your clients the best possible service, it is often necessary to put them in touch with other companies and businesses that sell products and services that complement those provided by you. However, this requires you to actually know other companies and businesses in order to be able to work with them. It is not a good idea to recommend a company when you don’t know what kind of quality of service it provides. The results could be disastrous for your relationship with your client if you refer a company that performs poor quality work. Your client will not place much trust in your recommendations and may cease to do business with you at all.
This means that when you attend a trade show, you need to have a dual focus. On one hand it is very important to meet new clients and work out what their needs are or are likely to be in the future and then tell them exactly how you can fulfill those needs. On the other hand, you need to be able to go around the trade show yourself in order to meet the other businesses who are showing there so that you can get to know them and what they do. It is virtually impossible to attend a trade show in your industry sector and not be able to find at least one company whose product or service complements your own and who after extensive conversation; you decide you could work with.
Just as your prospective clients use your materials to get an idea of the kind of service you provide, other businesses will use your materials when thinking of developing a mutually beneficial partnership with you. This means that when you sit at your booth with your professionally organized materials around you, you are not just advertising yourself to individuals but also to prospective partner businesses. It is also important to go around the trade show yourself so that you can meet and really get to know people from other businesses and see how professional their stalls are. Presentation is everything, and it is a good idea to have your booth properly arranged so that you will impress prospective partners as well as prospective clients.
