Selecting the Perfect Purse

Selecting the Perfect Purse

Most women carry some sort of a handbag or purse with them everyday to keep track of our most personal items and day-to-day necessities. In America, most of us call our handbag a purse. Traditionally a purse is actually a change purse or a billfold (also called a wallet). A handbag, however, is a fashionable (hopefully) bag used to carry important personal items like a wallet (or coin purse), keys, cell phone, cosmetics, or hair accessories. The exact content’s of a woman’s handbag, or purse as we say, vary from woman to woman. It is important that you select a bag that is right for you personally.

Many women do not know how much to spend on a purse. I recommend that every woman own at least one quality bag. There is nothing wrong with buying that adorable purple shoulder bag at Target that would go great with your bathing suit, but for your standard everyday use, you should have something durable, fashionable, and dependable. A nice leather bag will last many seasons, and will likely not go out of style.

The next thing you should consider when selecting a purse is to decide what you need and what you want to keep in it. You may want to carry a small clutch, but when it gets down to it, the things you end up carrying with you on a daily basis just will not fit. This is the time to be realistic about what you are going to carry with you. Most women cannot force themselves to lighten their load. I know I have thought on more than one occasion that if I buy a smaller purse, I will just carry less stuff. I know now that is just not realistic. Instead of carrying less stuff, I end up not carrying that adorable little clutch. Ever. It nicely decorates the shelves in my closet. The idea is to be realistic and know what you need and how much room you need to take it with you.

You will also need to decide what material you want your handbag to be made of. Personally, I think leather is the best material for a purse or handbag. It is durable, beautiful, easy to maintain, and simple to clean. A quality leather bag will often come with a warranty and is guaranteed to last a few years with proper care. If you are not a leather person, there are plenty of other durable fabrics to choose from. Canvas is a great durable alternative to leather. Canvas can also be printed and dyed a number of colors, and there are designs to suit any style. Be careful, however, when selecting a design. Be sure to choose something that is not trendy and can be worn with a variety of colors so you can carry it day to day without worry.

Regardless of your personal preference on size, style, color, or material, a woman’s purse (or handbag) is an important piece of her wardrobe and should be selected carefully. You should always carry a bag that is big enough to hold everything you need or want to have with you on a daily basis. Your purse should be a reflection of your personal style and should be a comfortable accessory choice.
