Take Care of Your Back to Avoid Back Pain

Chronic back pain is one of the most common ailments reported among the American public. Back pain can have many causes and the cause can be difficult or sometimes impossible to diagnose. Treatment for specific causes can be effective at times, though there is some data which suggests that invasive treatment such as surgery for back pain is pretty much a hit or miss proposition and in the long run may not be significantly more effective than doing nothing. One thing that does help both to ease many types of back pain, and to prevent back pain from occurring in the first place, is to take good care of your back.

Taking care of your back can prevent injuries that result either temporary or permanent back pain. Injuries like muscle strain, slipped disks, and some spinal alignment issues are often preventable. Using proper lifting techniques and lifting only weights that are not too heavy can dramatically reduce the number of back injuries that occur. In workplaces where proper lifting technique and knowing one’s limits are broadly taught to employees, back injuries, days of work missed from back injuries, and reported back pain go down significantly. Learn how to lift and learn to respect your limits to avoid back injuries.

Other back pain can be caused by poor spinal alignment. This can be caused by a wide variety of factors. Office workers who spend all day sitting at their desk in front of a computer can experience this kind of back problem. It’s important to make sure that the office workstation is ergonomically designed. IN other words, the height of the desk, chair, and monitor and the angle of the keyboard should all be designed so that their use promotes good posture and does not cause long term back pain.

Spinal alignment issues can also happen at home. Mattresses that sag in the middle and don’t properly support the spine as you sleep can cause misalignment. A mattress that is too firm can also cause back pain by concentrating the entire weight of the body on just a few pressure points such as the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle for those that sleep on their side. One of the best options is a memory foam mattresses. Memory foam molds itself to the contours of the body spreading out your weight across your entire surface instead of concentrating it on a few pressure points. Additionally, memory foam remains firm and supportive beneath the cradling surface, providing the support that your back needs to maintain proper alignment during sleep.

By paying attention to the way we treat our backs during the day and while we sleep, we can reduce or eliminate many of the causes of chronic back pain before they happen, and help the body to heal if we already have back pain.
